TOURIST INFORMATION

The kingdom of Thailand lies in the heart of Southeast Asia, making it a natural gateway to Indochina, Myanmar and Southern China. The country comprises 76 provinces that are further divided into districts, sub-districts and villages. Bangkok is the capital city and centre of political, commercial, industrial and cultural activities.

Bangkok means “City of Angels.” Bangkok today is widely considered to be one of the most dynamic and colorful cities in Asia. Its history is no less a colorful transformation from a sleepy village to a fast-paced 21st century mega-city with a modern skyline. Bangkok has considerable cultural and historical significance, from the early days of the “Rattanakosin Era” to its expansion in the nineteenth century. Bangkok’s evolution into the current regional hub of Asia came about while preserving the city’s unique soul and character, with its landmarks of temples and palaces that remain relatively unchanged over the years. Don’t miss this chance to travel around the city.

GETTING AROUND BANGKOK

Taxi
Taxis cruising city streets are metered. They charge a minimum of 35 baht for the first 3 kilometers, and approximately 5 baht per kilometer thereafter. Make sure you have change, as taxi drivers often don’t! Passengers must pay tolls in the case of using an expressway.

BTS Sky Trains
BTS sky Trains fly along Sukhumvit, Silom and Phahonyothin roads. The routes connect Bangkok’s leading hotels and major shopping areas such as Siam Square, Silom, Ratchaprasong and Chatuchak Weekend Market. The fare ranges from 10-40 baht according to the distance. For more information, contact the Bangkok Mass Transit System at tel: 0 2617 7300 or visit www.bts.co.th

MRT
The MRT starts from Bangkok Railway Station (Hua Lamphong) along Rama 4 road, to Silom intersection and Wireless intersection, passing Queen Sirikit National Convention Center to Asoke-Sukhumvit intersection, and Chatuchak Weekend Market. Operating Hours are from 06.00 am – midnight daily. Frequency is less than 5 minutes during the peak hours of 06.00-09.00 am and 04.30–07.30 pm and less than 10 minutes during the off-peak hours. Fare is 15 – 39 baht. For more information, please visit www.bangkokmetro.co.th

Bus
Public buses are plentiful and cheap, with a minimum fare of 3.50 baht to most destinations within metropolitan Bangkok. Air-conditioned buses have minimum and maximum fares of 8 and 18 baht, respectively. Air-conditioned micro-buses charge a flat fare of 25 baht all routes. A Bus Route Map is available at bookshops and at the TAT office.

Tuk-Tuks
These three-wheeled ‘open-air’ motorised taxis are popular for short journeys. Fares must be bargained in advance. Minimum fares, for journeys of up to 3 kilometers, are approximately 30 baht.

Boat
Taxis that are even more unusual, though equally convenient, are the river taxis that travel the Chao Phraya River. Some are just cross river ferries, but others serve the many landing stages on both banks and cover a route that goes up as far as the northern suburb of Nonthaburi.
